SHIBARI

Omfish' approach to Shibari is two-fold; the first is an exploration of kink practices as device for healing and creating safe spaces for rope bottoms and observers alike. The second objective is to re-imagine the ways in which figurative work takes shape by molding the form in ways that are meant to create conversations about the ways in which we interact with our bodies.

Shibari as Sculpture

In exploration of new mediums, Omfish has discovered and been training in the art of Shibari/Kinbaku or Japanese Rope Bondage, as a form of creative expression, connection to others and her natural surroundings, allowing her to define and redefine shape and form of both organic and inorganic subjects using minimal material in an art form virtually waste free. Omfish approaches shibari as a sculptural medium; accentuating features to enhance the intrinsic beauty of a subject or warping subjects in a way that forces the viewer to reconsider the subject altogether.

Shibari as Performance

Omfish uses rope performance as a more intimate way to interact with an object or person. The structural and strategic tying of Shibari and Kinbaku forces the artist to examine each detail of the form and make artistic choices based on each individual body and object. The cornerstone of rope bondage is trust and she uses this trust to build a scene catered to each person and each scenario. Whether it be sensual, slow tying to delve into the trance like meditative state of bondage or lively, elaborate tying to create intricate landscapes of rope, weaving her energy into every strand, she remains mindful throughout in order to create the right ambiance for the space and people I hold space with.
